How to start selling on Ozon from scratch in 2026: an honest step-by-step guide
Ozon is the second-largest marketplace in Russia by turnover, and the barrier to entry is lower than it looks: registration is free, you can start with a single product, and the platform takes on part of the delivery. But "register for free" and "turn a profit" are two very different tasks. Over three years we at Trusty have launched more than 240 brands on marketplaces and watched beginners lose money not at the start but two months in — when commissions, logistics and advertising eat the entire margin.
This article covers the whole path from zero to first sales with no filler: who is allowed to trade, what the launch really costs in 2026, how to get through registration, which model to choose, how to build the product card and how to avoid going negative on unit economics. Short answers to common questions are split out into separate guides — links are throughout the text.
Who can sell on Ozon

Three categories of sellers can trade on the platform:
- Self-employed (NPD tax regime). Only goods of your own production — resale is prohibited. Suits handmade goods, craftspeople and a small launch with no hired staff.
- Individual entrepreneur (IP). The most common option for a beginner reseller: resale is allowed, reporting is simple, you can hire people.
- LLC (OOO). For teams, several founders and large turnover.
A plain private individual with no legal status cannot enter Ozon — you need at least self-employed status. Which one is right for you is covered in the guide IP, OOO or self-employed status, and the tax side in the guide seller taxes.
What you can and cannot sell
Most categories are open, but some require documents and some are prohibited outright. Check your niche in advance:
- Certification or a declaration is required — children's goods, cosmetics, electronics, dietary supplements, textiles. Without the documents the card will be blocked.
- Chestny Znak labeling is required — footwear, apparel, perfume, tires and other categories from the list (see Chestny Znak).
- Prohibited — alcohol, tobacco, weapons, prescription medicines, perishable food.
Practical advice: choose your first niche by turnover and margin, not by what you like. A boring but fast-turning product beats a beautiful piece of dead stock — that is the subject of the guide turnover and liquidity.

What launching on Ozon really costs in 2026

Registration is free, but that is the cheapest part. The real costs come from four blocks:
- Sales commission. Depends on the category — roughly 3% to 15% of the product price. But that is only the "sales fee".
- Platform services. Delivery to the customer, shipment processing, storage, returns. In 2026, across many categories the combined load (commission + logistics + services) including acquiring reaches 40–55% of the price — and that is exactly the mistake made by everyone who counts only the "5% commission".
- The product. The first batch plus a reserve for restocking in line with turnover.
- Content and promotion. Photos, infographics, Rich Content and advertising at launch.
Registering in Ozon Seller: step by step
The process itself takes about 30 minutes, data verification usually a few hours:
- Go to seller.ozon.ru and create an account using your phone number.
- Enter your tax ID (INN) — the system will pull the details of the IP, OOO or self-employed seller.
- Fill in the store details: name, category, bank details.
- Accept the offer agreement and submit the data to Ozon's security team for verification.
Once verified, the account is open. A detailed breakdown of each step is in the guide how to start selling on Ozon; on the seller status itself — how to become an Ozon seller.
Fulfillment models: FBO, FBS and realFBS
The model determines who stores and delivers the product:
- FBO — you ship the product to an Ozon warehouse in batches, and the platform takes on storage, picking, delivery and customer service. The simplest at launch, but you pay for storage and depend on warehouse limits.
- FBS — the stock sits in your warehouse, you pick and pack the order yourself, and Ozon collects it and delivers it to the customer. More control over inventory, but you need your own picking operation.
- realFBS — you store and deliver yourself, using Ozon purely as a storefront. Suits oversized goods and non-standard conditions.
A beginner usually finds it easier to start with FBO. A detailed comparison with numbers is in the guide FBO vs FBS.

A product card that sells
Ozon depends on data completeness even more than Wildberries. The algorithm likes detailed attributes and Rich Content, and the customer likes clear photos and infographics. The minimum you need at launch:
- Photos and infographics. The first photo decides the click, infographics remove objections.
- Complete attributes. Fill in every field — it affects both the filters and the ranking.
- Rich Content. Blocks with descriptions, benefits and usage scenarios.
- An SEO description. A title and text built around real search queries — that is the subject of the guide SEO on Ozon, and building the semantics and description is covered by the card SEO service.
Do not forget the article number, SKU and barcode — without barcodes the goods will not be accepted at inbound.

Promotion at launch: why "just pour money into ads" does not work
The main beginner illusion: "I will publish the card and launch the ads". The problem is that a new card has no sales history, so the algorithm does not show it in organic results — and advertising without organic simply burns budget with a rising ad spend share (DRR).
A card grows when the loop closes: it gets seen, then bought, the algorithm rates it as strong, and shows it more often. To start that loop at launch you do not work with the ad account alone but with the whole chain at once: advertising, behavioral signals, reviews, card conversion. We covered the mechanics in detail in the article how to increase product visibility, and in practice this is handled by promotion.

Common beginner mistakes

- Counting only the commission. They forget logistics, storage, returns and acquiring — and are surprised by the loss.
- Buying a large batch blind. With no demand test, the money freezes in dead stock.
- Cutting corners on the card. Bad photos and empty attributes kill conversion before any advertising.
- Launching ads on a raw card. DRR grows, sales do not stick.
- Ignoring returns. A high return rate hits both your rating and your margin — see returns on a marketplace.
FAQ
"How much does it cost to start selling on Ozon?" Registering in Ozon Seller is free. The real costs are the product, the commission (3% to 15% depending on category), logistics, storage, returns and advertising. The exact sum is calculated for a specific product through unit economics.
"Can you sell on Ozon without registering as an entrepreneur?" You can as a self-employed seller, but only with goods of your own production. Resale requires an IP or an OOO.
"Which model should a beginner choose — FBO or FBS?" FBO is simpler at launch: storage and delivery sit on Ozon's side. FBS gives control over inventory but requires your own logistics. The choice depends on turnover and product dimensions.
"How quickly can you start selling?" Registration takes about 30 minutes, data verification usually a few hours. Before the first real sale, budget time for the card and the shipment.
"How much does Ozon take from a sale in 2026?" The sales commission is 3% to 15% depending on category, but once logistics, services and acquiring are included, the combined load in many niches reaches 40–55%. So you have to count the full economics, not the commission alone.
"Can you launch on Ozon with no experience?" Yes. It is enough to calculate unit economics before buying stock, register your legal status, build the card according to the rules and make a first shipment. Experience comes with the first SKUs — the main thing is not to buy large volume blind.
