SKU code, SKU and barcode on a marketplace: how they differ — in plain words

What a seller SKU code, an SKU and a barcode are on Wildberries and Ozon, how they differ, and why they matter for bookkeeping, analytics and goods-in at the warehouse.

What an SKU code, an SKU and a barcode are on a marketplace — in plain words

These are three different product identifiers. The seller SKU code is your own internal product code, which you assign yourself. SKU is a single stock-keeping item (a specific size or color); the platform assigns it its own number. A barcode is a machine-readable code (EAN-13 and the like) that is stuck on the product or its packaging and used during delivery and goods-in.

In short: the SKU code is your code, an SKU is the item variant (size or color), a barcode is the physical label on the product.

How they differ

  • Seller SKU code — you invent it yourself for your own records (for example, BLZ-LIN-WHT-M).
  • SKU — an assortment unit: one model in several sizes or colors means several SKUs.
  • Barcode — the barcode used to label products and boxes and to check them in at the warehouse.
  • Nomenclature number (on WB) — the internal card id inside the Wildberries system.

Why this matters

Tidy SKU codes and SKUs mean order in your bookkeeping and analytics (every item has its own unit economics). Barcodes are what let a delivery pass goods-in without errors.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

"How does an SKU code differ from an SKU?" The SKU code is your own product code used for your records. An SKU is a specific stock-keeping item (size or color); one model can have several SKUs, and the platform assigns its own numbers to them.

"What is a barcode on Wildberries?" It is a barcode (EAN-13, for example) generated for the product and stuck on the packaging or the box — it is scanned when the goods are checked in at the warehouse.

"Can I invent the SKU code myself?" Yes, you set the seller SKU code yourself in whatever format suits you. SKUs and system numbers are assigned by the platform.
