Product Card CTR: How to Boost Main Image Clicks

CTR sets the cost of your ad traffic and feeds organic ranking. What drives the click in search results, the rules of a strong main image, how to test variants — and how to avoid the clickbait trap.

CTR is the share of shoppers who saw your card in search results and clicked it. For advertising it is the price of traffic: the higher the click-through rate, the cheaper each visit at the same bid. For organic ranking it is a behavioral signal. And CTR is almost always lifted by one and the same element — the main image.

Why CTR Decides

  • In advertising. The auction favors what gets clicked: a card with a high CTR earns more impressions for the same money and lowers your ad spend share.
  • In organic results. A card shoppers scroll past sinks in the results; a card they pick out of twenty neighbors climbs. It is part of the behavioral signals that getting to the top is built on.

What Makes Up the Click in Search Results

The shopper sees a tile: main image, discounted price, rating and review count, delivery badges. Rating and reviews take months to build, price is bounded by your economics — the main image is the only thing fully in your hands right now.

Rules of a Strong Main Image

  • The product large and legible on a phone thumbnail. Check it at the real tile size, not on a full-screen mockup.
  • Stand out from the neighbors. Open the search results for your main query and look at 20 competitors in a row: if your image blends in by background color and angle, nobody sees it. Contrast beats beauty.
  • Minimal text. Two to four words in large type — bundle contents, key property, size range. Small text on a thumbnail is unreadable and turns into noise.
  • Honesty. The image promises exactly what is inside the card and the box. Clickbait lifts CTR and drops conversion, buyout rate, and rating.

How to Test Main Images

  • The WB seller account has an A/B testing tool for main images — the platform changes its availability and terms, so check the current state in your account. If the test is unavailable, sequential testing works: equal periods, identical ads, CTR comparison in campaign reports. The full mechanics are in the main image A/B test guide.
  • Change one variable at a time: background, angle, text overlay. Otherwise you won't know what worked.
  • Judge not only CTR but also conversion to cart and order — the whole funnel, not just the first step.

CTR Is Part of a System

Click-through brings people to the card; from there slides, video, price, and reviews take over. The foundations are in the card SEO and semantic core guides. And to keep a cheap click from going to waste, your ads must run without junk impressions — see negative keywords.

FAQ

"What is product card CTR on a marketplace?" The ratio of clicks to impressions in search results: how many shoppers who saw the card's tile clicked through. It affects the cost of ad traffic and organic ranking.

"What counts as a good CTR?" There is no universal benchmark — click-through depends heavily on category, placement, and season. The working reference point is your own trend: use tests to push CTR up against your own baseline.

"How do I raise a card's CTR?" Through the main image: product shown large, contrast against competitors in the results, minimal legible text, an honest offer. Plus a competitive discounted price — it shows right in the tile.

"Does CTR affect organic positions?" Yes, click-through is part of the behavioral signals: cards that shoppers pick out of the results get shown higher and more often by the algorithm.
