Ozon packaging requirements: FBO, FBS and what acceptance checks

How to pack goods for Ozon without acceptance refusals: individual packaging by product type, labeling of units and freight units, the FBO and FBS differences, and how packaging drives volumetric weight.

On Ozon, packaging is not only about passing acceptance: volumetric weight is calculated from the packaging dimensions, and that sets the fee on every order. Packing correctly means both protecting the product and not paying for air. Below are the requirements by fulfillment model and how they tie into logistics.

The mirror guide for the neighboring platform is Wildberries packaging; the general dispatch principles are in the basic guide.

Individual packaging: baseline requirements

  • Intact and sealed — the item in packaging that will survive the conveyor, the sorting line and the delivery.
  • By product type: fragile — cushioning on every side; liquids — leak-proof and upright; clothing — individual bags; electronics — the factory box plus protection.
  • Unit labeling: a legible barcode matching the card; for categories under mandatory marking — a Chestny Znak code (Russia's national product marking system).
  • Nothing extra on the outside: old barcodes sealed over, stray stickers removed.

Ozon publishes the exact category requirements (including label sizes and prohibited types of packaging) in its seller knowledge base and updates them periodically — check them before the first supply of every new category.

FBO: supplying an Ozon warehouse

  • Freight units — boxes and pallets within the weight and dimension limits, carrying the freight unit labels from the supply request.
  • Contents = the request. Discrepancies stall acceptance and breed disputes; photographing before dispatch is basic hygiene: loss claims.
  • Slot and dispatch point — as booked: slots and supply limits.

FBS: shipping orders from your own warehouse

On FBS you pack every order yourself — and the requirements are stricter in the details:

  • Parcel packaging — must meet Ozon's norms by type (bag or box) so the parcel gets through the network's sorting.
  • Parcel label — printed from the dashboard, stuck on a flat surface, a single legible copy.
  • Assembly deadlines — running late hits your seller rating harder than any packaging detail.

Common causes of acceptance problems

  1. The freight unit label is unreadable or does not match the request.
  2. Overweight boxes or non-standard dimensions with no prior approval.
  3. Mixing SKUs in one box against the packing rules.
  4. Goods under mandatory marking with no codes, or with invalid codes.
  5. Packaging that fails to protect the goods — they may accept it, but the breakage becomes your returns and disputes.

Checklist before a supply

  1. Units: sealed packaging, protection by type, barcode plus a Chestny Znak code where required.
  2. Freight units: within the weight and dimension limits, labels from the request, contents matching the documents.
  3. Packaging matched to the product — no paid-for air.
  4. Photos of labeled freight units — filed in the archive.
  5. Slot booked, documents ready: step-by-step supply to Ozon.

FAQ

"What are the packaging requirements on Ozon?" Sealed individual packaging with a legible barcode (plus a Chestny Znak code for categories under mandatory marking), protection matched to the product type, freight units within the weight and dimension limits carrying labels from the supply request. Category-level details are in Ozon's knowledge base.

"How do FBO and FBS requirements differ?" On FBO you prepare a supply as freight units for an Ozon warehouse; on FBS you pack each parcel for the sorting network and print the order label from the dashboard. The baseline requirements for protecting the product are the same.

"Does packaging affect logistics cost?" Directly: the fee is calculated from the volumetric weight of the packaging. An oversized box raises the cost of every order — match the packaging to the product.

"What happens if goods reach the warehouse in poor packaging?" The options: refusal to accept the freight unit, acceptance with disputes and deductions, damage during handling that comes back later as returns. Packing it properly the first time is cheaper.

"Do I need gift or branded packaging?" Not mandatory, but it works on impression and repeat purchases — especially in gift niches. The main thing is that the branding must not break the labeling requirements or the legibility of the barcodes.
